Funding Education for Employment

The 2nd annual Youth Competition hosted by Eastern Kentucky University allowed 66 active WIA Youth from our 7 Contracts (Jessamine County Board of Education, Kentucky River Foothills, Mayor’s Training Center, Frankfort/Thornhill, Richmond Chamber, Anderson County Board of Education, and Garrard County Board of Education) and our Older Youth (Career Track) Programs to participate in various categories that will assist them in "Preparing for Tomorrow’s Workforce". The Competitions were held at Eastern Kentucky University (521 Lancaster Avenue Richmond, KY) on March 30, 2007. The Competition began at 9:00 and concluded at 5:00 with an Awards Dinner following the Competition beginning at 5:30 pm.

Competition Categories

  • Carpet Maze – This event allows participants to learn to work together as a team while following instructions.
  • Decision Making - This event provides the participant with the opportunity to utilize decision-making skills by presenting situations related to employment, peer group, school, etc.
  • Employment Techniques - This event will provide the participant with the opportunity to experience a simulated employment interview situation including the opportunity to complete a job application and the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to make a telephone call and effectively secure a specific appointment for a job interview.
  • Essay - Participants will present an essay on how the WIA program has impacted their life.
  • Logo Design - The participant will create a program logo design to promote WIA Steps to Succe$$. The winning logo design will be the design for the next year competition and program year marketing.
  • Public Speaking - Participant presents a prepared speech five to seven (5-7) minutes in length on conference theme.
  • Scrapbook - This event is design to highlight the programs work for the 2006 program year
  • Service Learning - This event is designed to give participants the opportunity to demonstrate the program’s ability to provide service-learning activities, which partners the local agency with their community.
